Today's NVR is the preserved heritage railway which operates along 7.5 miles along the former Peterborough to Northampton line which closed under the Dr Beeching regime in 1966.

Based close to the A1 near Peterborough and within easy reach of the midlands the Nene Valley Railway is a heritage railway that offers the whole family a great day out. They run a regular steam train service but Railway enthusiasts with a penchant for Diesel are not forgotten either. This preserved railway's line passes through the gorgeous Nene valley using part of the original London and North Western line from Northamptonshire into Cambridgeshire. Passengers can enjoy river views at the Yarwell halt, and at the main station of Wansford indulge themselves with something home-made and tasty in the cafe plus visit the museum and gift shop. Along the line passengers can alight at the Nene Park via the Ferry Meadows and Orton Mere halts. NVR's Peterborough stop puts passengers within walking distance of the plentiful shops in the town centre and the magnificent Cathedral which is one of the finest Norman buildings surviving in Europe today.
