Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival (15 – 23 Feb) is returning once more in 2020 with a whole host of internationally-renowned musicians and an inspiring and diverse programme.

2020 is the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's birth and the classical music world will be celebrating all year. The upcoming festival's programme has been inspired by the great composer and will feature not only his works, but also those of his contemporaries. Festival Co-director and pianist Daniel Tong explains:

'One could be forgiven for thinking that for a period at the beginning of the nineteenth century, Beethoven was the only notable composer of instrumental music on the planet, preceded by Haydn and Mozart and joined in his later years by the younger Schubert. Of course even these edges are rather more blurred than we tend to remember, but what of the other composers in the limelight at the time, to whom history has been less kind? Our 'Beethoven in Context' theme situates his works amongst those of his lesser-known, though often highly skilful and equally forward-thinking contemporaries: George Onslow, Ferdinand Ries, Johann Nepomuk Hummel and Ignaz Moscheles. Beethoven's music will shine, as it always does, but the music of these neglected figures will paint a rich picture of musical life during the period in question, allowing us the rare chance to assess both their and Beethoven's music in context.'

There are four concerts throughout the Festival, plus the ever popular 'Discovery Day' where audience members are invited to immerse themselves in the Festival theme with illustrated talks, concerts and a chance to have lunch with the musicians. At the final concert there will also be the World Premiere of a piece by British composer Philip Cashian, commissioned to celebrate the Festival's 20th year in 2019.

Musicians performing in the 2020 Winter Festival include pianists Daniel Tong and Simon Crawford-Philips; violinists Malin Broman, Sara Trickey and Emily Nebel; violists Tom Hankey and Malin William-Olsson; cellists Alice Neary, Christoph Richter and Kate Gould and clarinettist Robert Plane.

The opening concert in Holy Trinity Church, Hereford takes place on Saturday 15th February followed by Treowen Manor, nr. Dingestow on Sunday 16th, both at 4pm. The evening concert takes place on Thursday 20th, 7.30pm at the Bridges Centre, Monmouth, with the Discovery Day (11.30am – 6pm) following on Saturday 23rd at Treowen Manor again. The final concert will take place at the Bridges Centre, Monmouth on Sunday 23rd at 4pm.
