Discover this magical woodland in the heart of Herefordshire

Queenswood is a fragment of a vast ancient wood that once stretched to the Welsh borders and beyond. This native woodland teems with wildlife and is a wonderful place for all the family to explore.

A collection of trees from around the world was begun at Queenswood in 1953. This arboretum now covers 47 acres and 1,200 rare and exotic trees from all over the world. It is famed for its autumn colour but is beautiful all year round from glades of wildflowers and boughs laden with blossom in the spring to frosted branches in winter.

There are different way-marked walks around the Arboretum ranging from 1 mile to 2.5 miles, many on easy-access paths and some routes suitable for electric mobility scooters. Don't miss the viewpoint with panoramic views to the Malvern Hills in the east across to the Black
Mountains in the west.

The wider woodland around the Arboretum stretches for almost 170 acres in total, however, so if you want to explore further, just pull on some boots and pick up a map from the visitor centre!
Start your visit at the Gift Shop & Visitor Centre where volunteers will introduce you to the site. Run by Herefordshire Wildlife Trust, the shop stocks a wealth of gorgeous gifts for all ages, many designed and made in Herefordshire by local producers and artisans. Both the Visitor Centre and the Café are housed in beautiful restored timber-framed buildings.

As well as a popular, family-run, independent café (www.queenswoodcafe.com), there is a pizza oven and barbeques available to hire and picnic benches in the woodland glade close to the playground - perfect for an al fresco lunch!

A full events programme runs throughout the year which includes Adventure Club and Natural Craft activities for children during school holidays, a Wassail in January, the h.Energy Autumn Festival and a Christmas Grotto in December. Adult craft workshops also run through the year – please check the website for details.

2019 will see the culmination of the Queenswood Heritage Gateway Project, uncovering the social and natural history of this woodland which lies at the heart of rural Herefordshire.

The project will see the installation of a new audio-visual trail, 'Lyrics, Leaves & Lives'. This will draw from a year of research and will run through the Arboretum where visitors can listen to excerpts of oral history connected with the site, poems and bird song. The trail will also link to the specimen trees within the Arboretum and the natural history of the woodland.

Within an area of oak trees in the Arboretum, a memorial to the First World War will be created. Queenswood was clear-felled during the Great War, all the trees cut down to provide timber to support the war effort, and the woodland we see today has regenerated over the last century. The First World War Commemorative Woodland, with an art installation at its centre, will provide a contemplative space which explores the role played by Herefordshire's landscapes and rural communities during the war and the legacy it left.

The project's legacy will be the publication of a book explaining the timeline of Queenswood and Dinmore Hill and collating the social, cultural and natural history of the site. This will be available to purchase from the shop from the end of 2019.
