Eastnor Castle

(Herefordshire Historic Buildings)

Ledbury Herefordshire England
Description :

Eastnor Castle was built in the early 19th century in the style of a medieval Welsh-Border fortress, by John, First Earl Somers and is a good example of the great Norman and Gothic revival in architecture of that time. It is dramatically situated in a 5000 acre estate in the Malvern Hills and remains the family home of the Hervey-Bathursts, his direct descendants.

This fairytale castle is as dramatic inside as it is outside. A vast, 60 foot high Hall leads to a series of State Rooms and Gothic Drawing Room designed by Pugin, with its original furniture and to the Italian Renaissance style library which boasts magnificent views across the lake.

The Hervey-Bathurst family have lovingly restored the interiors and many of the castle's treasures which have been buried away in cellars and attics for 50 years - early Italian Fine Art, Medieval armour, 17th century Venetian furniture, Flemish tapestries and paintings by Van Dyck, Reynolds, Romney and Watts and early photographs by Julia Margaret Cameron - are now on display.

Eastnor is available as an exclusive-use venue for corporate and private events, and there are twelve beautiful guest bedrooms available for groups who wish to include overnight accommodation in their programme. The hilly and varied terrain of the estate is ideal for adventure and teambuilding activities, including Land Rover off-road driving using over 30 miles of demanding test-track.

We are open from Easter and on the Sunday and Monday of the May Bank Holidays then every Sunday until the end of September and Sunday to Thursday during the 6 week summer holidays. (please see website for opening times).

Eastnor Castle is situated in the foothills of the Malverns, lying between the Cotswolds and the Welsh Marches. The Castle is 21/2 miles east of Ledbury on the A438 Tewkesbury road.
