The Checkers Restaurant and Rooms in Montgomery, Powys

A warm welcome, truly tasty food, local ales, fine wines and comfortable surroundings await you at The Checkers in Montgomery.

The former coaching inn is enjoying a new lease of life following its renovation in 2010. Today it's a harmonious combination of old and new, with a relaxing bar and lounge area, beautiful dining room and five bedrooms.

Chef proprietor Stéphane Borie's kitchen offers the very best in classic French cooking, and in October 2011 The Checkers became the fourth restaurant in Wales with a Michelin star. The cooking is complemented by a comprehensive wine list, local real ales and a relaxed and friendly service.

The Frenchman and the Farmers Daughters

The Frenchman
Stéphane Borie grew up in Agen. His kitchen apprenticeship began in Bordeaux before moving to London in the late 1990's. He spent seven years with Michel Roux at The Waterside Inn Bray, the three Michelin star training instilling a passion for flavour, excellence and dedication to his trade.

Stéphane went on to Le Manoir Aux Quat Saisons and Daylesford House as private chef to Sir Anthony Bamford, before opening The Herbert Arms at Chirbury with Sarah and Kathryn in 2008.

In 2011 the team moved to their newly renovated premises in Montgomery and Stéphane was very honoured that The Checkers was awarded a Michelin Star in October 2011, seven months after opening.

The Farmer's Daughters
Sarah and Kathryn grew up on a dairy farm in Shropshire.

Sarah is an accomplished chef who spent several years working in the country's finest kitchens including The Waterside Inn where she met Stéphane. Sarah was the first woman to work in every section in The Waterside's kitchen and later went on to establish a successful business as a freelance chef, cooking across the UK and Europe for private clients. Sarah and Stéphane now have two young daughters, Lexie, five, and Roxanne, three, who despite their young age, really do share their parent's passion for food!

Kathryn runs front of house, where an informal and relaxed service complements Stéphane and Sarah's approach to cooking. Kathryn went to university in Sheffield to study nursing and went onto work in Sheffield's Royal Hallamshire Hospital. In 2007 she relocated to Shropshire with her partner Neil, and was unable to resist the opportunity to work with Sarah and Stéphane, having long shared their love of truly good food. Christmas Eve 2011 saw the arrival of Neil and Kathryn's daughter Emelia Seren.

The Restaurant

Stéphane's menu is classically French and changes with the seasons sourcing local produce wherever possible.

Our a'la carte menu is available over lunch and dinner and is complemented by a seven course tasting menu. The tasting menu offers a superb opportunity to enjoy a breadth of beautiful seasonal flavours and the many skills of Stéphane and his team.

We are able to cater for larger parties, 8 or more, usually offering a slightly smaller menu and sometimes a pre order. Please call or email and we can discuss your reservation and menu.

Special dietary requirements and allergies can be catered for on most occasions with a little notice. Please call a few days ahead if you have any questions or would like to inform us of any special requirements.

On occasions a dish may not be available due to difficulties sourcing the ingredient, particularly with fish & seafood. Please call ahead to check availability if there is something you particularly would like.

We do not have a children's menu but we are able to offer smaller portions of a selection of dishes from the menu to diners under 12. Children are very welcome to join us for lunch and children over 8 are welcome in the evening.
