Y Talbot is an historic and characterful Grade ii listed inn facing the town square in the centre of Tregaron, Ceredigion. We believe that the ingredients of a good inn haven't changed much over the years and that our guests today will echo the words of George Borrow from 150 years ago.

Our characterful pub, dating back to at least the 17th Century, owes its origins to Tregaron being the starting point for cattle droving over the Cambrian mountains to the Midlands and Smithfield Market in London.

In July 1848, Batty's Menagerie, a travelling circus, arrived in Tregaron. Unfortunately one of its elephants is reputed to have fallen ill and is said to be buried behind Y Talbot.

In 1854 George Borrow (author of "Wild Wales") stayed here and noted the "warm welcome to English persons". The railway arrived in 1864 and a new hotel was added to the drovers inn.

More recently in 1986, President Jimmy Carter stayed here and enjoyed the beautiful scenery and excellent fishing. He liked it so much that he returned 2 years later!

Various improvements and additions have been made to the building over the years and we have recently completed an extensive renovation in order to continue the tradition of providing a good bed, a good meal and a good welcome for all our guests.
