The Herschel Museum is situated in a delightful middle grade townhouse furnished in the style of the last quarter of the 18th century.

somerset_herschel2It was the site of Herschel's discovery of the planet Uranus in 1781 and where his sister Caroline discovered several comets.  Of particular interest are Herschel's workshop where he made his telescopes and the music room and astronomy displays.

The Star vault astronomy auditorium, and the beautiful Georgian garden also form part of the visit. The newly opened Caroline Lucretia gallery houses a changing programme of temporary exhibitions and there is an audio tour and museum shop with astronomy themed books, pocket money toys and gifts.

Groups can be accommodated out of normal opening hours and we offer an ongoing educational programme for schools, Scouts, Cubs and Brownies.

Open daily from 1 - 5pm, closed Wednesdays (except during school holidays)

weekends and Bank holidays 11 - 5pm. Admission prices apply.

Closed mid December until the end of January.
