John Leach, eldest grandson of renowned potter Bernard Leach and son of David Leach, continues the family tradition at Muchelney Pottery on the edge of the ancient village of Muchelney in the heart of the Somerset Levels.
He started the pottery in 1965 with his wife Lizzie who manages the Pottery Shop adjacent to the workshops. Master potter Mark Melbourne works alongside John making the catalogue range of kitchenware pots.
Muchelney pots are used daily in kitchens all over the world, but the pottery is still very much a small family business. The pots are all lovingly hand-thrown, using local clays, and wood-fired in the three-chambered kiln to the high stoneware temperature of 1320°C which creates their distinctive 'toasted' finish.
When you plan a visit to John Leach's Pottery on the southern fringe of the ancient village of Muchelney, allow time to discover the secrets of the surrounding Somerset Levels... water-flanked lanes, thatch-roofed villages, beautiful churches, flourishing traditional crafts, grand houses and gardens, welcoming pubs...
You may also like to explore and stroll around John's pond, a County Wildlife Site, which has been featured several times in television programmes - but if the weather's wet, don't forget your wellies!
Shop and Gallery are open Tuesday – Saturday, 10-1, 2-4.
Bath Aqua Glass is situated in Walcot Street, Bath's 'Artisan Quarter' 10 mins from Bath Abbey. It takes its name from Bath's Latin name Aquae Sulis. 'Bath Aqua' is made by adding copper oxide to molten glass, this gives it the beautiful aquamarine colour reminiscent of the historic city's spa waters.
