Charlotte-Gale-Mother-Shiptons-Dropping-Well-12x8-2369Within historic woodland along the River Nidd is Mother Shipton's Cave, the birthplace of Yorkshire's famous prophetess. It is situated next to the Petrifying Well, England's oldest visitor attraction. Visit Knaresborough to discover the story of Mother Shipton and the waters which turn objects to stone.

Millions of visitors from all over the world have been enchanted by the park's natural beauty, mesmerised by the Petrifying Well and enthralled by Mother Shipton's birthplace and her amazing story. She lived some 500 years ago, during the reign of Henry VIII. Her extraordinary prophecies predicted the fates of several rulers within and just after her lifetime; the invention of iron ships; the Great Fire of London in 1666; and the defeat of the Spanish Armada.

The park has several scenic picnic areas alongside the popular River Nidd; an adventure playground; and museum and gift shop. Dogs are welcome throughout the park as long as they are kept on a lead.

During 2019 families can have a Hoppy Easter following an adventure trail; a mythical May Half Term with fairies and dragons; a Summer full of magic, witches and wizards; and a Spooktacular Halloween. 2018 saw the first ever Christmas Experience at the attraction during which children visited Santa; chose a gift from his Toy Shop; sat in his sleigh; and listened to Holly Berry tell a festive story. The event was a resounding success and preparations are underway to make Christmas 2019 even better!

Mother Shipton's Cave is open weekends in March then every day from 1st April to 3rd November. Opening times are 10am to 4.30pm, with last admission at 3.30pm. At weekends and during the summer holidays the park closes later at 5.30pm, with last admission at 4.30pm. The Christmas Experience is pre-book only (via the website) and runs on selected dates throughout December. There is parking on site - £2 all day in addition to admission. School and group visits are welcome but will need to book ahead. Please note that the park is closed January and February.
