In a commanding position overlooking the River Calder, to the south of Wakefield city centre stands Sandal Castle.

Best known for its role in the 1460 Battle of Wakefield, the remains of the 13th century castle with its fine motte and bailey can still be seen today. Stroll amid the ruins and learn about the castle's history from the newly-installed interpretation boards, designed to engage with both adult and young visitors.
Marvel at the stunning views across the Calder Valley: from city lights to lakes and forests, an ever-changing vista allows the visitor to experience something different on every trip. Or see the castle from a different angle as you follow the trail to Pugneys Country Park. Once there, why not pause for a drink and a bite to eat at the Boat House Café?
