From Roman legions to rugby league, Castleford Museum uncovers the little-known story of this former mining town's rich and varied history.

Situated in the town centre, the museum is housed on the upper floors of the striking brick-and-sandstone Carnegie library.
Static displays include archaeological finds from Castleford's Neolithic beginnings as a Bronze Age settlement, and a uniquely important Iron Age chariot from a burial at nearby Ferrybridge Henge. The museum also showcases artefacts from the town's time as Lagentium, a Roman fort and civilian outpost, as well as relics and remnants of Castleford's mining heritage.
A selection of photographs by local photographer Jack Hulme provides a captivating pictorial record of daily life in the pit village of West Fryston.
As well as the static displays, the museum hosts fascinating exhibitions which are updated on a regular basis.
Castleford museum has plenty to interest both adults and children, including dressing-up items, a collection of history books for various age ranges, kids' craft sheets, historical toys and interactive displays. The museum holds family events throughout the year, with plenty of craft activities to keep little ones entertained during the holidays. In addition, the museum offers regular events for all ages, including Adult Craft Sessions on the first Monday of every month.
In a League of Their Own (until 28 March 2020): Rugby League is born and bred in West Yorkshire. This exhibition focuses on the history of clubs within the Wakefield district, with objects and memorabilia from Castleford Tigers, Featherstone Rovers and Wakefield Trinity and more.
Community Cases (from April 2020): Four cases, curated in partnership with the local community, showcase Castleford's unique history: The story of Castleford Tigers; a fascinating collection of politically important pin badges; an exploration of childrearing through the years; Castleford's centuries-old role as a manufacturing and distribution hub.
