The Piece Hall in Halifax is one of the most extraordinary buildings in Britain.

An impeccable example of Georgian architecture and the only example of an eighteenth-century cloth hall which has survived intact, The Piece Hall has been at the heart of Halifax life for nearly 250 years and in 1954 it became a Grade I listed building.

On 1 August 2017, The Piece Hall re-opened its gates following a multi-million-pound transformation, heralding a new era for the monumental Georgian structure as a contemporary leisure, retail, cultural and heritage destination and the beating heart of a world-class cultural quarter.

The immense, 66,000 sq ft open air piazza is enclosed by a retail and leisure mix of independent new start-ups, expanding local businesses and returning tenants, marking an enterprising new chapter for the sole surviving Georgian former cloth hall.

Since it opened last August, The Piece Hall has welcomed nearly three million visitors, a marked increase on the estimated annual footfall of 1.6 million, dozens of independent businesses line the courtyard and the venue has hosted internationally significant events including the Tour de Yorkshire, Father John Misty and the Antiques Roadshow.

On 25 January 2019 the first visual arts commission from The Piece Hall Trust will be unveiled in the iconic courtyard. Sculptor David Murphy has been selected from over 40 submissions to create a bold and confident response to the building's history as a global centre for textiles.

Commissioned in partnership with Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) and co-funded by the Arts Council National Lottery Project Grant programme, 'The Blanket' will be a large-scale floor-based sculpture, positioned at the heart of the 66,000sq ft piazza. Steel tubes will be used to create a magnified weave, a shallow grid of intercepting and merging lines of subtly curved metal that together create a large 'picnic blanket'. Visitors will be encouraged to interact with the 15m x 8m sculpture and enjoy the Grade I listed surroundings.
